What do you need to know about them? (besides they smell)
A septic tanks is a large concealed tank that is located in the ground, commonly in the back yard. The tanks are made out of concrete, fibreglass or polyethylene.
A septic tank is used in places that don't have sewer mains (mostly common in rural areas or campgrounds) How does it work? Every time you flush your toilet, use your bathroom or clean the dishes. That sewerage waste will flow into your septic tank via the sewer drain.
The septic tank is designed so solids form a sludge on the bottom of the tank, while the oils and greases form a layer on the top called scum. The liquid waste water know as effluent will be disposed of through the outlet drain where it will travel to the septic drain field (also known as the leach field) through piping, where it becomes ground water.
